On The Rise
A relatively new company out of Taiwan, 1Zpresso has quickly made a name for themselves in the world of manual coffee grinders, producing almost a dozen different models since 2017. With several versions aimed at producing high-quality and uniform coffee grounds for every application, the J-Max may just be one of the most innovative espresso-focused hand grinders on the market. From the sleek, robust body, to its simple and intuitive grind adjustment, to a large, 48mm, titanium-coated burr set, the J-Max could just be the last hand grinder you’ll ever need.
Intuitive, Fast, Friendly
It’s undeniably clear that when 1Zpresso was designing the J-Max, a simple approach to grinding espresso was at the top of the list. The top-mounted, external grind adjustment system completely eliminates the need to remove the ground catch to change your grind setting, as is seen in many manual coffee grinders. And while the J-Max is still a stepped grinder, it’s about as close to a stepless system as possible. With each click on the grind adjustment only amounting to a particle size difference of 8.8 microns, or 0.0088 millimeters. Combine this with 48mm, titanium-coated steel burrs and an almost eight inch crank arm, and you’re looking at a full dose of espresso smoothly ground in under 30 seconds.
Form & Function
1Zpresso may have designed the J-Max as an espresso-oriented grinder, but that doesn’t mean that other brewing methods have been left behind; in fact, it would be more than fair to call it an “all-around grinder”. Due to its unique burr geometry, the J-Max offers sweet and balanced flavor notes when used with any brewing method all the way up to cold brew. 1Zpresso’s burr geometry also lends itself to less static while grinding. For the home enthusiast, this means less retention from the J-Max, mitigating coffee waste. In order to make cleaning as simple as possible, 1Zpresso includes a dual-sided brush and an air blower to ensure that your J-Max runs as efficiently as ever and remains a daily driver for years to come.
